Testosterone is a sex hormone that is made in the testicles in men and smaller amounts in the ovaries and adrenal glands in women. In men it is responsible for normal male development and sexual function. It is also responsible for many physical and chemical processes in the body, such as the development of bones and muscles and the regulation of libido (sex drive), erection quality, and even lean muscle and body fat distribution. In women, combined with the female sex hormone estrogen, testosterone plays a role in the growth and maintenance of female reproductive tissue and bone mass. It also has been shown to increase lean muscle mass, improve mood, fatigue, and libido, and improve vaginal atrophy.
